Screen Printing
Screen printing is one of our most popular and versatile
decoration techniques. Screen printing can be done on almost
any flat surface, in almost any colour and with a variety
of special effects, although in practice, special effects
are rarely used.
The vast majority of screen printing happens on fabrics.
The advantages of screen printing as opposed to other techniques
are low cost and a large surface area. The cost of screen
printing increases with the number of colours used so it's
advisable to keep the number of colours used to a minimum,
especially for quantities below 250.
Important things to bear in mind when putting together
artwork for screen printing are below.
- The standard width for a large print on a shirt is 25cm
wide, you can go larger but your artwork has to fit within
the seams of your smallest shirt and be at least 3cm away
from the seams.
- Printing onto any colour other than white or snow marle
costs more than printing onto white.
- The same ink can look different when printed on a 100%
cotton shirt compared to being printed on a poly/cotton
blend. If using multiple styles of shirt in the same colour,
ask your consultant about the fabric blends and their
possible effect on the resultant colours.
- Best results are obtained when printing onto smooth fabrics with tight knits. Combed cotton fabric has few tiny hairs sticking up and gives a better finish with tidier edges and less bleeding.
